I want to love deeper. I want to be intentional about observing the people around me. What are their strengths? What beauty do I see? I want to appreciate them in a way that builds them up and encourages growth in their lives.
People are the most interesting and valuable creation to behold. And relationships are adventures with potential rewards unimagined.
Psalm 133 King James Version (KJV)
1 Behold, how good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity!
2 It is like the precious ointment upon the head, that ran down upon the beard, even Aaron’s beard: that went down to the skirts of his garments;
3 As the dew of Hermon, and as the dew that descended upon the mountains of Zion: for there the Lord commanded the blessing, even life for evermore.
Brothers and sisters doing life together in the unifying spirit of Christ is precious before the LORD and He likens it to a full, even got my clothes oily, anointing! It’s meant to go deep. The family of Christ is meant to go deep with each other. Relationships are meant to deepen you and to help you grow.
Proverbs 27:17 As Iron sharpens iron, so a man sharpens the countenance of his friend.
Our relationships are meant to edify us and to change us in a positive way. We need these kinds of relationships in our lives. We all do.
So how do we go about doing our part in being this kind of friend?
We love well.
1 Corinthians 13:4-8 Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails.
We seek their good above our own. We care about their struggles and their victories. We sorrow with them – We rejoice with them. We seek to draw them out, to hear their heart, to listen well, to know them. We pray for them and desire to offer edification to them. We want to bless them, to DO for them. We care about what God is doing in and through them. This is where we want to draw the focus – God. God in you and God in me. That is where the spirit of unity dwells.
